Playford Civic Centre / Shedley Theatre
10 Playford Bvd, Elizabeth

With its string of pop classics, delightfully tacky costuming and a feel-good storyline, it seems a natural progression for romantic comedy The Wedding Singer to make the leap into stage musical territory. The world fell in love with the film when it hit screens in 1998, and since its 2006 Broadway debut audiences have re-lived the music, the magic and the mullets time after time.

Now it is Adelaide's turn as Matt Byrne Media brings The Wedding Singer to the Arts Theatre throughout July, with Rohan Watts and Claire McEvoy stepping into the roles made famous by Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

Robbie Hart (Watts) is an out-on-his-luck wedding singer, whose dreams of making it as a rock star are more faded than his acid-wash jeans. To make matters worse, his fiancee has walked out on him. The one redeeming grace is that the gigs allow him to get closer to waitress Julia Sullivan (McEvoy), herself stuck in an unhappy engagement.

Producer Matt Byrne enthuses over the musical's broad appeal. "People who've never been to the theatre in their lives are lining up to see this show", he says. "They love the film and they can't wait to see it on stage". To be part of the fun, get tickets early, as audiences will be packing out the theatre like A Flock of Seagulls.
