Editorial Review
The special ingredient that makes the Wild Mulberry Cafe's mushroom sauce lip-smackingly good is a secret more closely guarded than the colonel's eleven herbs and spices. I tried to extract the mushroom sauce recipe from host, Sharon and chef, Steve but I was left feeling like fungi - they kept me in the dark. If you haven't noticed, mushrooms are a popular ingredient on the Wild Mulberry Cafe menu. You'll find them in the hearty chicken and pesto pie and, while this delight doesn't include the sacred sauce, fans still flock for its filling. Many Robe tourists put the Mulberry's gigantic gourmet pies on their eating itinerary. Along with the cafe's muesli and fruit bread, the range of pies are baked on the premises.
Have your home-made fruit bread toasted and slathered with jam but be sure to enjoy a sleep-in first, as the Mulberry is loved for its all day breakfasts. The lunch menu starts with offerings of wedges, nuggets or a big bowl of chips, leaving you to ponder if such a charming establishment offers more than the taste of its deep fryer. This hum drum start, however, is eclipsed by juicy burgers and a tempura calamari salad with lime raita. Another salad option boasts tiger prawns with an Asian dressing while baked deep-sea fish is served with snapping fresh salad and crisp chips. The dessert cabinet encases an elaborate construction of home-made bread and butter pud and, an ode to the cafe, a delish mulberry tart. The Wild Mulberry happily lets you borrow one of their picnic rugs so you can enjoy your nosh on the lawns surrounding this lovely little cafe.
