Editorial Review
Yakumi's minimalist style is as refreshing as the stiff Glenelg breeze, and a welcome divergence from the pizza-heavy Jetty Road strip. At night the tables are crowded with plates of hand-pressed nigiri sushi that comes in all the colours of the nigiri-rainbow, with an interesting fresh oyster variety speckled with chilli, radish, grated ginger and green onion.
Yakumi's layout is very small, square and monochrome - much like the Advertiser's daily crossword. The set menu ($36 a head) gives you quite a few choices; perhaps start with slivers of sashimi, a plate of assorted sushi and the obligatory miso soup. Then proceed with your choice of main courses including the chargrilled porterhouse beef roll or pan-grilled green tea smoked salmon, and order the black sesame ice-cream to end your meal on a divinely rich note. The a la carte menu allows more variation (though perhaps less value for money) and additional dessert choices: tease your palate with the lighter than air tempura fruits: slices of banana, strawberry, and pineapple served with ice-cream and Drambuie orange sauce.
