David Duchovny has checked into a rehabilitation clinic to treat his sex addiction... but not because he's following in the footsteps of his skirt-chasing Californication character Hank Moody.

Duchovny recently released a statement confirming that he had voluntarily checked into a treatment centre, sparking gossip that he had been unfaithful to his wife, actress Tea Leoni, who he married in 1997.

One rumour claimed that Duchovny, 48, had been caught having an affair with his female tennis instructor.

But according to Fox News, friends of The X-Files star claim that he was not unfaithful and is being treated for an addiction to internet pornography. The actor's representatives are yet to comment on the rumours.

Duchovny's X-Files character, FBI agent Fox Mulder, also had a fondness for pornography: it was implied that he often watched X-rated videos and had boxes of naughty magazines around his apartment.

Before he was married Duchovny was often rumoured to have a sexual addiction. "If you're single and in the public eye and you have a few dates, you're a sex addict," the star told Cosmopolitan magazine in 1997.

Duchovy and Leoni have two children, daughter Madelaine West, 9, and son Kyd, 6.
